The finding
A Black Friday page is not a campaign. The surrounding system wins the search demand.
The strongest measured programmes reused a destination shoppers and search engines could rediscover. They refreshed it early, connected it to narrower shopping intents, lowered the crawl depth of priority products and kept price, stock, delivery and returns consistent.
The same information also helps generative systems answer comparison and buying questions. GEO adds another discovery surface. It does not remove the need for sound ecommerce SEO, merchant feeds or first-party measurement.
Keep one useful destination. Change its state as the campaign changes.
Method
A broad sample with a deliberately narrow definition of winner.
The study covers 75 retailers across four Black Friday seasons. It separates observable execution from measured outcomes so a polished page is never presented as proof of commercial success.
Historical pages can show what was published. They cannot prove rankings, traffic or revenue. Missing captures mean the campaign state is unknown, not that the retailer did nothing.
Australia
The 2025 generic head term had clear winners and fallers.
Ahrefs snapshots for ‘black friday sales’ compare 27 November 2024 with 27 November 2025. The traffic figures are third-party monthly estimates for that query, not retailer analytics.
| Retailer | 2024 → 2025 | Estimated traffic | Reading |
|---|---|---|---|
| JB Hi-Fi | 1 → 1 | 105,990 | Held the leading position |
| THE ICONIC | 9 → 2 | 94,214 | Largest upward move in the comparison |
| Myer | 2 → 4 | 60,297 | Retained substantial generic visibility |
| Amazon Australia | 3 → 11 | 11,381 | Lost generic head-term share |
JB Hi-Fi retained `/pages/black-friday-sale`. Ahrefs showed exact-page referring domains increasing from 35 in November 2024 to 147 in November 2025, although the increase began months earlier and cannot be attributed to Black Friday PR without backlink-level review.
THE ICONIC retained `/black-friday/` and exposed a useful 2026 holding state with category paths, event history, dates and returns information.
Myer described 2025 as its biggest Black Friday event on record. That is first-party commercial context, not evidence that SEO caused the result.
Amazon Australia retained `/blackfriday`. Its exact-page referring-domain count rose from 44 in October to 125 in November 2024, but the 2025 snapshot still showed lower generic head-term visibility.

The evidence supports recurring associations, not a claim that every behaviour caused every result.
Rise at Seven’s 2025 index placed John Lewis first, Appliances Direct second, Currys third, Boots fourth, Amazon fifth and Argos eighth across 450 generic and product terms. Argos had risen from position 100 earlier in November. This is provider-measured visibility rather than first-party traffic.
Best Buy retained strong organic visibility while an external transaction panel reported lower year-on-year Black Friday and Cyber Monday sales in 2024. Search visibility and commercial performance must be measured separately.
- 01Preserve one destinationKeep a year-free campaign URL and refresh the message, dates and product set each season.
- 02Open before demand peaksPublish a truthful pre-sale state early enough for crawling, indexing, discovery and editorial planning.
- 03Build an intent networkConnect the main hub to category, product, comparison, gift, price-point and question-led pages.
- 04Make priority pages shallowUse the homepage, navigation, breadcrumbs, category pages and relevant guides to reduce crawl depth.
- 05Keep product facts consistentAlign price, stock, variants, shipping, returns and offer dates across the page, markup and merchant feed.
- 06Retain a useful post-event stateReplace expired urgency with results, future dates or evergreen buying help instead of deleting the URL.

Six ways retailers waste the opportunity
Start again
Create a disposable campaign URL every year
Launch late
Wait until sale week to publish or link the page
Stay thin
Offer a product grid without buying guidance or intent depth
Hide priority
Keep the hub and hero categories out of internal navigation
Let facts conflict
Allow visible price, schema and merchant feeds to disagree
Delete the asset
Remove the destination or redirect it somewhere irrelevant after the sale

One search plan can supply the social campaign
Use the same questions, categories and product facts across search and social. Each asset should point shoppers to the stable campaign destination rather than a short-lived social-only page.
SEO and AI search
Product truth is where conventional and generative search meet.
~18%
organic share of retail visits in Semrush’s 2025 sample
~0.15%
AI-referral share of retail visits in the same sample
SEO remains the larger discovery foundation. AI referrals appear relatively more useful around comparison and decision-support moments, where complete product facts and clear buying guidance matter.
Google and AI shopping systems use structured and unstructured product information. Price, availability, shipping, returns, identifiers, variants and descriptions should agree across the visible page, structured data and merchant feeds.
In one UK study run on 28 November 2025, Obsero reported answer visibility of 61.7% for Argos, 58.1% for Currys, 55.8% for John Lewis and 44.7% for Amazon. It shows who appeared in the tested answers. It does not show that a particular schema type or page element caused the result.
Publishers are part of the discovery system too. Aleyda Solis estimated that news and media domains captured about 15% of clicks among the top 100 UK Black Friday domains, while 47% of ranking domains appeared in News features. Useful original data, named products, clear dates and quotable expertise can earn coverage that also becomes a citation surface.
Shopify
Make the collection the campaign engine. Let product pages close the decision.
Collection and PLP
Earn the discovery click
- Use one year-free collection handle such as `/collections/black-friday`.
- Write a unique title, H1 and search snippet for the current event state.
- Add concise buying guidance around the grid and link useful sub-collections.
- Sort available hero products first and audit tag or app-generated filter URLs.
- Link the collection from the homepage, navigation and relevant guides.
Product and PDP
Close the buying decision
- Keep unique product titles, descriptions and evergreen product URLs.
- Show live price, compare-at price, availability and accurate variants.
- Explain delivery, returns and offer expiry close to the decision.
- Use descriptive image alt text and useful product media.
- Keep product pages, structured data and feeds synchronised.
Do not add “Black Friday 2026” to every product title. Keep the product intent evergreen and carry campaign messaging in the hub, collections and controlled theme components.

Evidence ledger
Read the sources with the same care as the findings.
Most retailer outcomes are published by agencies or technology providers involved in the work. They remain attributed and should be read as reported results unless first-party analytics or independent visibility data corroborate them.
Ranking tools and traffic panels are directional. They are useful for comparing visibility at a point in time, but they are not a substitute for the retailer’s Search Console, analytics, transaction and margin data. AI-search evidence is newer and materially smaller than the evidence for organic search.
Your next seven days
Nominate the evergreen URL, pull last year’s data and fix the first five internal links.
